Scottish Hogmanay revellers were treated to the sight of mysterious fiery flying lights in Glasgow's West End between approximately 1:00am and 1:40am. The first fiery light soared across like a firework rocket but did not go out with a bang like ordinary fireworks but instead flew off quickly into the distance like a plane (in a northerly direction.) It had almost disappeared from view into the distance and the clouds when it circled back round and made various low flying manoeuvres and behaved exactly like a helicopter or other craft doing surveillance - only without the noise that you would usually hear from a helicopter. Then a second identical light appeared from the same direction (south-west of where people were standing.) It stayed slightly behind and did some circling but was not as active as the first one. Both lights hovered at times then made controlled wide circling movements independently of each other, not in formation. At one point the second light flew towards the other but did not stay long near the other and flew back again. The lights looked bigger than a helicopter. The most active one flew quite low at times and at other times flew into the cloud. This spectacle lasted 30 to 40 minutes. Since they were not fireworks, aeroplanes or helicopters, two other possible explanations came to mind: Chinese sky lanterns or perhaps hot air balloons.
